TV Tokyo – 17 August 2026

It’s been a little quiet around here for a while. That’s partly down to the heat here, combined with the humidity – Thailand has got nothing on it. It makes you a bit lazy. Reports from the past few months will be coming online soon. For now, I’d like to share something I’ve given you a few teasers about in my previous blogs.

The TV Tokyo episode about my tatami apprenticeship was broadcast last Monday! You can watch it via the attached link if you set your VPN to Japan. You’ll also need to enter a Japanese postcode (5940032, for example).

YOUは何しに日本へ?

I’ve been told by the TV crew that the episode may only be available online for a week. So, if you’d like to see how an unknowing, clumsy and slightly nervous Dutchman is taken under the wing of the nicest family in Japan and shown the tatami craft in Osaka, don’t put off watching it!

I’ve just got back from a 10-day holiday in Hokkaido with a Dutch friend, where the temperature was considerably more pleasant than in central Japan. So, last Monday we watched the episode there, although of course there are no Dutch or English subtitles. You can, however, hear me speaking quite a few words of English and even some Dutch to emphasise the international nature of the programme. Naturally, by now I speak fluent Japanese…

See you soon.
